The goalkeeper has been in fine form for Steve McClaren's side.
The Magpies were thrown into a crisis at the beginning of this campaign, with first choice number one Tim Krul being ruled out for the season.
They then lost number two Karl Darlow to an injury, meaning they were left relying on third choice Rob Elliot to step up into the side.
He has since been a revelation for them though with a number of top performances, and Thompson was keen to praise him.
“His form has been absolutely terrific,” he told Soccer Saturday.
“Tim Krul must be looking and thinking ‘oh my goodness’. He knows what he’s doing; he’s been an absolute inspiration.”
“If you’ve got someone like that behind you, you think to yourself ‘we’ve got a chance now’.”
With Rob Elliot performing so well in the side, Steve McClaren now has a big question to ask himself in the January transfer window.
Many would have expected him to move for a more experience goalkeeper given Elliot’s lack of experience in general, never mind in the Premier League.
He though, has flourished, arguably being one of their better players over a recent decent run, and it would now be cruel to take him out the side.
With a lack of back up though, McClaren may still be tempted to bring in another player in case of further injuries. Whoever it is though, is unlikely to be a replacement for an inspirational Elliot.
