Merson says Arsenal are the best fit for Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has been linked with Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Paul Merson believes Arsenal are the best fit for Pep Guardiola, writing in his column for the Daily Star that the Gunners have everything in place for the Spaniard.

The Bayern Munich boss has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all pinpointed as potential destinations.

But Merson feels the team best set up for the former Barcelona manager is Arsenal, citing the club’s traditions and style of football as his reason behind selecting the Gunners.

“The best fit for Guardiola in the Premier League is not United OR City, or even Chelsea, who probably won’t be in the Champions League now – it’s Arsenal,” Merson wrote.

“They already play the way he likes and he wouldn’t have to tinker too much. The only trouble is Arsene Wenger is there for as long as he wants to be.”

“Would he stand aside? I don’t know. But if they go on and win the league, Wenger might think, ‘OK, I’m going to finish on a high, bring the lad in’. Who knows?”

Guardiola has been linked with Arsenal before, yet Wenger seemingly isn’t in any rush to move and considering he is still only 66, there appears little reason for him to stop now.

The Gunners are in the midst of a real title challenge and with team progressing well, Wenger may see potential in his side to challenge for major honours and that could drive him on further.

United and City both have managers employed at present, yet both sets of fans are quite critical of their respective campaigns thus far and Guardiola is a special case.

The popular manager won 14 trophies in four seasons at the Nou Camp, yet it’s not his success which has left fans and observers drooling, it’s the amazing style of football which goes with it.

Merson wants to see Guardiola in the Premier League, though if it’s a straight shootout between the Manchester clubs, he feels there is little contest in terms of who comes out on top.

Merson added: “If Pep Guardiola has a straight choice between Manchester United and Manchester City his decision is a no-brainer.”

“United are one of the biggest clubs in world football but what else do they have to offer him? There’s a lot of work to be done there. There isn’t at Arsenal. Or City.”

“City are made to be champions. They have the squad and the resources, and he already friends in high places there. None of that applies to United. How many United players would get into the Bayern Munich team? None of them.”
