Villa will return to Premier League action in a few hours’ time when they take on Newcastle away from home at St. James’ Park.
The Magpies will head into the game as favourites, having defeated Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in their last two league fixtures.
However, former Villa striker Gray believes that Remi Garde’s side will pick up all three points from the encounter courtesy of a narrow 1-0 win.
“I’ve got a funny feeling that Villa might win this,” Gray has predicted on Paddypower.com. “Steve McClaren has pulled some great results out to save his job, but Newcastle are suddenly expecting to be favourites, and that’s why the Villains are dangerous. Jack Grealish is probably their best player, he is key. I’m backing them to win narrowly.”
A footnote added: “Andy’s bet : Aston Villa to win 1-0 at 10/1, with Rudy Gustede to score the only goal.”
Villa have gone 15 Premier League games without a win, the longest run without a victory in their league history. The Villans have kept just two clean sheets in their 16 league games this season.
Newcastle have won three out of their last five games - prior to this run they had won just one in 11.
