Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed to the club’s official website how desperate he was to play for Southampton last season.
Alderweireld joined Southampton on a season-long loan deal from Spanish club Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014.
The Belgium international, who can play as a centre-back, a right-back or a defensive midfielder, struggled for playing time at Atletico during the 2013-14 season.
The 26-year-old has revealed how hungry he was to play for the Saints last season.
“It was easier to stay in Atletico,” Alderweireld told Tottenham’s official website. “We’d just reached the Champions League final, won the title before that and (Diego) Simeone had confidence in me but my feeling was that I wanted to play every game, so I made the decision to go to Southampton.
“I gave everything for the club, 100%, I played against Spurs with a broken shoulder! I gave everything. I just hope they know that. I had a wonderful season there, got to know the Premier League and I was very pleased to play there.”
Alderweireld has been in superb form for Tottenham so far this season and has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
The Belgian has been a rock at the back for Spurs and is playing a key role in their attempt to finish in the top four of the Premier League this campaign.
The former Ajax star has scored two goals and created two chances in 15 Premier League appearances for the North London outfit so far this season.
Alderweireld has a pass accuracy of 81% and a shot accuracy of 86%, and has created 16 headers, two dribbles and eight tackles.
