The Black Cats are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 12 points from 16 matches.
Sam Allardyce’s side have a tough run of games coming up over the festive period, starting with an away match against Chelsea later today.
Sunderland will face Manchester City away from home at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day and will end the year with a home game against Liverpool.
The Black Cats will start the New Year with a clash against fellow relegation candidates Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light.
It will be tough for Sunderland during the festive period, but Cattermole is confident that the team will be able to pick up valuable points.
“Now we have to approach a tough run of games with a confident mentality,” the 27-year-old has written on Sunderland's official website.
“I believe we are more than capable of causing a few upsets during the festive period and hopefully we can make it a very happy Christmas for everyone associated with the club.
“For that to happen we need to work hard and be solid as a team starting this weekend at Chelsea, and even though they are lacking something at the moment they are a very good side and they will be desperate to put it right.”
It is quite bold of Cattermole to claim that Sunderland can cause upsets over the coming days.
Winning against City and Liverpool will not be easy, but perhaps a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge today is not entirely out of question.
Given the poor form that the Blues are in, even a win for Sunderland cannot be completely written off.
