Tonny Vilhena has opted to see out his contract at Feyenoord, despite interest from Southampton, SoccerNews reports.
Ronald Koeman confirmed to VI yesterday that he is still keen on bringing Vilhena to St Mary’s Stadium, although he did admit that that could be in either January or next summer.
Many believed that the young midfielder, 20, would want to leave De Kuip in January due to his lack of playing time, but the SoccerNews report claims that he would prefer to leave in the summer when his contract expires.
Head coach Gio van Bronckhorst has told the report that the door is open for Vilhena to remain with Feyenoord, but he has made it clear that his future lies away from the Eredivisie.
It was Koeman who gave Vilhena his debut with Feyenoord, and the two remain friends, with the Saints boss always expressing an interest in signing him.
He is set to go back in for the 20-year-old in January, but it appears more likely that a summer free transfer will be completed to take the midfielder to the South Coast.
