According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are pursuing a deal for Schalke's Joel Matip - and could offer a pre-contract agreement to him in January.
The Reds have suffered some defensive blows recently following the injuries to Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho, and whilst manager Jurgen Klopp isn't expected to make many January transfers, he could strike a deal for next summer.
The Daily Mail suggest that Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing Schalke star Joel Matip, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
24-year-old Matip, who stands at a giant 6ft 4in tall, has made a real name for himself at Schalke, and is capable of playing at centre back or in holding midfield, giving Klopp a potentially versatile defensive option in his squad.
A Cameroon international, Matip is bound to be in demand in January considering that clubs outside of Germany can offer pre-contract agreements to him inside the final six months of his contract at the Veltins Arena.
That's the avenue Liverpool are allegedly considering, and could offer him a contract in January with a view to him joining in the summer.
The report notes that Newcastle United are also interested, but with Klopp no doubt familiar with Matip's quality from his time in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, it would be little surprise if the German looks to engineer a pre-contract agreement in January.
