Holt said: “He’s brilliant. Like you said, he’s still young and since the first day he came in you could see his quality. He’s only 18-years-old, so he still has a lot of time to develop, so I don’t think you can [criticise him].”
Zelalem arrived at Ibrox over the summer on loan, agreeing a deal until the January transfer window with the option to extend in for the rest of the campaign.
The young USA midfielder arrived with a fantastic reputation, considered by some as one of the best wonderkids in world football, although there were doubts about his lack of physicality and suitability for senior men’s football.
He has proven his worth to the Gers since then, registering six assists in 14 appearances, playing as part of the three-man midfield alongside Holt.
He is composed on the ball, and can truly pick a pass out of nothing, and he has proven he can match up to the more physical side of the game.
Holt has been impressed with the ‘brilliant’ Zelalem, and has highlighted his age as proof that he can only continue to improve and grow as a player over the coming years.
Playing consistent football with the Gers will help this development into a top class player, and it would be no surprise to see Zelalem agree an extension with Rangers until the end of the season.
