The goalkeeper has been one of their star performers in recent weeks.
The Magpies goalkeeper has been a star performer for the side in recent weeks, with him once again impressing with several big saves in the win over Tottenham.
He has been given his chance in the last eight games with usual number one Tim Krul having been ruled out for the rest of the season.
The 29-year-old has taken his chance with both hands, but admits he was not expecting to get it this season.
"I maybe thought it wouldn't have happened at the start of the season, but that's football for you,” he told Sky Sports.
"Swings and roundabouts happen all the time and if you get an opportunity you have just got to take it and enjoy it.
"I think that is all I have tried to do, play with a smile on my face and just appreciate playing for a club like Newcastle, because sometimes that gets lost with all the storm that comes around being a Newcastle player.”
Elliot will be hoping to put in another top performance this weekend, with relegation rivals Aston Villa travelling to St James' Park.
Neither side has enjoyed the best of campaigns so far, although while the Magpies have started to turn things around in the last few weeks, Villa are still struggling to find any sort of form.
That makes Saturday’s clash the first real relegation six-pointer of the season, with both sides in need of all three points, and Elliot is sure to play a big part in deciding where they may go.
