Silvestre: Keep Mertesacker and Koscielny fit and Arsenal win the Premier League

Former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre believes the Gunners can win the title.

Former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has told the London Evening Standard he believes their central defence holds the key to winning the title.

Arsenal are currently juggling injuries to players including Santi Cazorla, Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere, but at centre back they are currently healthy.

Silvestre thinks the pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker can stop anybody the Premier League has to offer.

He said: "Koscielny and Mertesacker have formed a nice partnership. If they can still play together, I think they would be able to win it.

"I think Laurent and Per have the qualities to stop the likes of Harry Kane, Aguero, Martial or Rooney."

The Frenchman's praise of the duo is interesting and well deserved, as their recent form has gone largely unheralded thanks to the impressive performances of Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil in attack.

Where his argument falls down however, is that Gabriel Paulista has this season proved himself a capable stand in, playing well when called upon this season, leading the defence to a clean sheet against Liverpool when partnered with inexperienced Calum Chambers.

Perhaps more integral to all their defensive options is goalkeeper Petr Cech, who has lifted the games of the back four by giving them an assurance that was not there before, and he is a stopper the club cannot afford to do without.
