Newcastle are reportedly keen on Borussia Monchengladbach star Granit Xhaka.
23-year-old Swiss international Xhaka came up through the ranks with FC Basel, just as other stars such as Ivan Rakitic, Xherdan Shaqiri and Yann Sommer did before him.
Now though, he's starring in Germany with Gladbach, and his appearances with the Bundesliga outfit appear to have attracted interest in his signature.
The Daily Mail reported earlier today that Arsenal are considering a move for Xhaka in January following the injury to Francis Coquelin, but it appears that the Gunners aren't the only team looking to sign him.
The Chronicle suggest that Newcastle United's scouts have been watching Xhaka, and they certainly like what they have seen from the Swiss midfield maestro.
However, it's stated that Monchengladbach are looking for a fee in the region of £15m, which is more than Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is willing to pay in January.
Another potential problem for the Magpies is that Xhaka allegedly wants to join a Champions League team, having starred for Gladbach in their Champions League campaign this season.
Pitted against Manchester City, Juventus and Sevilla, Xhaka impressed in the Gladbach midfield, prompting the interest in his signature - and having thrived at that level, it's only natural that Xhaka looks to make an instant return to Europe's premier club competition.
Newcastle can't offer that right now, and combining that with the asking price, Steven McClaren's men face an uphill task to sign Xhaka.
