Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reportedly has defender Maximilian Hofmann on transfer wishlist

Liverpool are being linked with a young Austrian defender.

According to a report from Italian website Calcio Mercato, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is considering a move for Rapid Vienna centre-back Maximilian Hofmann.

The 22-year-old came through the youth ranks at the Austrian side and he has made 55 appearances for the first-team to date, scoring twice in the process.

Liverpool’s back-line came in for plenty of criticism under former manager Brendan Rodgers, and while Klopp has even got the much-maligned Dejan Lovren playing well it would be no surprise if the Reds strengthened in that area when the January transfer window opens.

Hofmann’s current contract expires in the summer of 2017 so if Liverpool were to make a reasonable bid Rapid Vienna could find it hard to turn it down, even though Hofmann is playing a vital role for them this season.

Rapid’s continued participation in the Europa League – where they will play Gary Neville’s Valencia in the last 32 – could be the deciding factor, but only time will tell if Liverpool can bring in the talented young defender before the summer.
