Newcastle and Watford defenders topped charts in key area last weekend

St James Park

Newcastle United and Watford secured away victories at the weekend.

Newcastle United’s Daryl Janmaat and Watford’s Allan Nyom recorded more tackles than any other Premier League player at the weekend.

The Hornets continued their fine season with another victory on the road, this time defeating relegation-threatened Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Odion Ighalo scored the only goal of the game after four minutes, and from then on the visitors defended superbly with 27-year-old right-back Nyom in outstanding form.

Daryl Janmaat Newcastle 5 90
Nyom Watford 5 90
Patrick McNair Man Utd 4 89

As seen in the table provided by Opta Stats, no other defender over the course of the weekend posted more tackles than the former Udinese man as Sunderland simply found no way through.

The Black Cats dominated the second half for long spells, yet Nyom and his teammates stood firm and picked up as Watford secured their seventh clean sheet of the campaign.

Nyom was not the only defender to manage five tackles, though, and he was joined at the top of the charts by Newcastle right-back Janmaat who was also superb at the weekend.

The Magpies came from behind to record a 2-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur, a result which followed up a 2-0 success over Liverpool and moves the Tyneside outfit up the 15th in the table.

Dutch international Janmaat was given the tough task of preventing the likes of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela from wreaking havoc on Sunday, and he went about his business in superb fashion.

The 26-year-old has started all but one Premier League match this season, and after a somewhat slow start he and his teammates are now beginning to show signs of really kicking on.
