Collymore said: “Have you noticed what Jurgen Klopp did with Brad Smith? He actually watched him [play]. This wasn’t a DVD that was passed on, this wasn’t a screen with the chief scout and self-title director of football, this was a manager who said ‘what do we have here’ first.”
Smith was out of contract at the end of last season, and he rejected an extension from Liverpool whilst Brendan Rodgers was still in charge.
Smith remained wth his registration owned by the Reds, as he is under the age of 24, but it appeared as if he was searching for a new club who would give him more chances at first-team level.
However, the youngster reversed his decision, just nine days after Klopp was named head coach at Anfield, agreeing a long-term deal when it became clear the German would be utilising him this season.
Since then, Smith has played a full 90 minutes of Europa League action, as well as making a shorter cameo appearance in the League Cup. He looks to be part of Klopp’ set-up at Anfield, and Collymore has praised the head coach for actually looking at his own youth academy, rather than immediacy looking to sign players from elsewhere.
He has gone in person to watch these players, rather than relying on scout reports and DVDs, and has been convinced enough to promote Smith whist Rodgers did not want to make such a decision.
