Remi Garde says Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor needs to do more

Aston Villa 2

Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor could be set to leave in January, according to reports.

Remi Garde has told the Daily Mail that Gabriel Agbonlahor needs to do more if he is to force his way back into Aston Villa’s first team.

Agbonlahor was not even in Villa’s match-day squad to face Arsenal at the weekend, and the Daily Mail suggest that he could be set to depart the Premier League strugglers in January.

The pacy striker has rarely featured since Garde took charge at Villa, and the French boss admits that he has not been impressed by the 29-year-old’s performances.

"He was available for selection but that’s all," Garde said. "Yes (he needs to do more). Gabby has been away due to injury, he needed more training sessions before coming into the team."

Agbonlahor has been with Villa for the whole of his professional career, but he has failed to develop into the player he once threatened to be.

The forward is blessed with frightening pace, but his frequent inability to take his chances has caused him to be criticised.

Agbonlahor has not scored in any of his 10 appearances this season, and he only hit the back of the net six times during the previous campaign.

Norwich City have been said to be interested in signing Agbonlahor recently, and it seems that if the Canaries do make an offer in the new year, Villa could be tempted to accept the bid.
