Remi Garde feels Aston Villa's lack of confidence is obvious

Aston Villa were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal in their latest fixture.

Remi Garde has told Aston Villa’s official website that his side’s main problem against Arsenal was obvious to any observers.

Villa fell to a 2-0 defeat against the Gunners in their most recent outing and the French boss felt that his players all lacked confidence in the fixture.

The Villans have not won a league match for 15 matches and Garde believes that his squad’s morale has, unsurprisingly, been damaged by their poor run of results.

"We need a win to spark confidence," he said. "You saw times in the game against Arsenal where we had a lack of confidence. It was obvious. Sometimes we are too fragile.

"But we have to work on that. Only work can help us in this situation.

"Globally the spirit of the team is good. They do their best. A spark would be very good for us - that would come with a victory. For me now, it's now about giving more confidence to the players and the group, individually and collectively."

Villa won their first match of the season against Bournemouth, but they have struggled to pick up points ever since.

Under the guidance of former manager Tim Sherwood Villa looked well short of the standard required, and they have shown few signs of promise since Garde has taken change.

Villa were outplayed by Arsenal and they rarely threatened in the match, even though they were playing in front of their own supporters.

The Villans are already eight points away from safety, and they desperately need to start collecting victories if they are to move away from trouble.

Villa’s next outing comes on Saturday against a Newcastle United side who have won their last two matches and look very much on the up.
