Could the Tottenham Hotspur winger be on his way to Southampton?
In comments published by the Southern Daily Echo, former Southampton player Gordon Watson has suggested one player that Saints boss Ronald Koeman should go all out to buy this January – Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend.
The England international has struggled for game-time at White Hart Lane this season and he has recently been making do with appearances for Spurs’ under-21s.
But with Euro 2016 drawing ever closer, Townsend may need to play regular first-team football in order to secure a place in Roy Hodgson’s summer squad.
A recent report from the Daily Mail claimed Newcastle United were readying an £8million bid for the 24-year-old, but Watson feels Southampton should make their move quickly, bringing in a player who would significantly strengthen their starting options.
“He can turn defence into attack in a matter of seconds, and Ronald needs players who can give his defence a breather,” the former striker told the Southern Daily Echo.
“Saints should go out and sign him, play him, and that would only be to Southampton’s benefit.”
At his best Townsend is a wonderful winger but he has been far from consistent in recent seasons and that has limited his chances under Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.
A January move seems likely, and if Watson gets his way Southampton should head the queue.
