Steve Gatting praised West Ham after this week's draw between the under-21 sides.

Arsenal under-21 coach Steve Gatting has praised West Ham's side after a hard fought draw on Monday night.

Alex Pike scored the opener for West Ham in the 1-1 draw before Chris Willock's deflected effort rescued a draw for the young Gunners.

Gatting felt that West Ham posed a particularly tough test, and was proud of his Arsenal side.

Speaking to the Arsenal official website, he said: "We didn’t lose, we fought well to pull a goal back and we will keep going into the next game now. I know we can play better football and West Ham is a tough place to come to.

“West Ham defended well as group, made it very difficult for us and giving a goal way made things harder for us but we kept going and all credit to the boys for getting that goal back and getting a result for us.

“It was a very competitive game, as you would expect in a London derby."

West Ham's side included two summer signings, with former Sampdoria midfielder Pedro Obiang and Stephen Hendrie among the starters, along with Reece Oxford, who featured on the first game of the Premier League season as the Hammers stunned Arsenal's senior side at The Emirates.

The only members of the Arsenal side to have played for the first team were Alex Iwobi, Krystian Bielik and Glen Kamara, who featured in the Capital One Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the start of last month.
