Aleksandar Mitrovic has started on the bench in Newcastle United's two most recent matches.
Mitrovic had been a regular member of the Magpies’ starting line-up since arriving from Anderlecht in the summer transfer window, but he was dropped for matches against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
The Serbian did show his quality at White Hart Lane though, as his introduction helped Newcastle turn the game around and pick up a 2-1 victory.
And Mitrovic said: “I was angry because I spent two games on the bench and I wanted to show that I deserved to play.
“OK, I didn’t say anything because I respect Papiss Cisse (his replacement) and I respect the coach.
“It is hard for anyone to be on the bench for two weeks but I worked hard and waited for my moment.”
McClaren has chosen to start the last two matches with Siem de Jong and Papiss Cisse up front, while Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez have been reduced to bench-warming roles.
The team selection may have appeared a brave one at first, but it seems to have worked – as Newcastle have won on both occasions.
Mitrovic will hope that his scoring cameo against Spurs can force him back into the starting XI though, as he looks to build on his initial displays at St. James’ Park.
The 21-year-old’s passion has endeared himself to supporters at Newcastle, but he will need to start hitting the back of the net more frequently if he is to get back in the team.
