Alan Shearer criticises Aston Villa's summer spending

Aston Villa brought in a number of new players during the summer transfer window.

Alan Shearer has slammed Aston Villa’s recruitment during the summer transfer window on Coral’s website.

The Villans were particularly active before the season started, as they brought in a host of new faces.

However, most of Villa’s additions have struggled to adapt to English football – and Shearer believes that their poor recruitment will lead to them being relegated.

“I really can’t see Aston Villa surviving this season," the former Newcastle United striker said. "With their points total and the effort they are putting in, it’s a bit of a mess at the moment.

“They spent £50 million in the summer on players with either a lack of experience or lack of Premier League experience. I know Tim Sherwood very well and I know he would not have signed all of those players. The signing system and recruitment at the club leaves a lot to be desired.

“There have been five seasons that Villa have been poor now so if you don’t improve, the inevitable will happen and I am afraid that looks like it is going to be this season with Villa.”

Villa lost both Fabian Delph and Christian Benteke in the summer, and their strategy to replace the pair was to bring in untested players.

The Midlands club purchased many of their players from Ligue 1, but very few have settled so far.

Villa have been lacking quality and they are already cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Remi Garde’s side have failed to win any of their last 15 matches in the league, and they are eight points away from safety, leaving their survival chances looking slim heading into the vital Christmas and New Year period.
