His side won 2-1 on Sunday to escape the relegation zone.
It had looked set to be a disappointing afternoon for McClaren's side, with Eric Dier’s header giving Spurs a 1-0 lead at half time, although it could have been much worse than that.
They fought back in the second half though to win for the first time since being behind this season, and McClaren has praised them for their response at half time.
“We had a great response at half-time. The players said it all, ‘We're 1-0 down but we're still in the game. Let's fight, let's keep going’, the Daily Mail reports him saying post match.
“Normally we crumble and teams get on top. I'm so proud of them and it was great to be in that dressing room. They were so vocal and there was such a determination not to go down the normal path of losing the game.”
“We could not shut them up. The response was fantastic. We have not won back-to-back games for over year or had a comeback win - to do it was immense.”
It is that fighting spirit that will have pleased Newcastle fans the most given how absent it has been for most of this season.
The side have been widely criticised on a number of occasions for failing to show a lack of desire or care for the club, but have done that, and some extra, in their wins over Tottenham and Liverpool.
Those results took them outside of the relegation zone and up the table, and their fans will be hoping that stays the same for the rest of the campaign.
