Jan Vertonghen discusses whether this is the same old Spurs

The Tottenham centre-back has been reacting to Sunday's 2-1 loss to Newcastle United.

Jan Vertonghen has been discussing whether Tottenham Hotspur's loss to Newcastle on Sunday is the same as similar collapses in the past, according to the London Evening Standard.

Indeed, the centre-back thinks defeats like the one at the weekend have been the story of the last couple of seasons.

The Belgian is quoted as saying by the Standard: "It has been the story in the last couple of seasons but there is a difference in this team.

"We feel this is an incident and in the last couple of years that was a bit different. Of course, we wanted to keep the run going but I believe we can start another one now."

Maybe the defender has been misquoted but it sounds like he's contradicting himself. Vertonghen has said it's been the story of the last couple of seasons - and, as many fans would put it, same old Spurs - but then says there's a difference in the current team.

Yet he then says the incident is the same as ones that have happened before. Why is it any different, then?

Still, this may well be a different Tottenham side and the fact this was only their second Premier League defeat of the season says a lot. The test now is how Mauricio Pochettino's team respond. There will be no more Europa League over Christmas - the perfect chance to show this Tottenham squad is actually capable of bucking the trend.
