Arsenal climbed to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday when they overcame Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park.
The Gunners’ victory was secured courtesy of goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey and Remi Garde’s side rarely troubled their visitors from North London.
Villa had 18 goal attempts but only two of those were on target and while that was in part down to some wayward finishing, Arsenal’s back-line also held firm throughout, with Per Mertesacker partnering Laurent Koscielny in defence.
The German international looked like losing his place to Gabriel Paulista earlier in the campaign, but Mertesacker is now impressing as the club’s skipper and he has played every minute of Arsenal’s last six league matches.
The 31-year-old’s experience will prove vital in the weeks and months ahead, with Arsene Wenger’s side having a very good chance of finally reclaiming the Premier League crown, but there is plenty of football still to be played.
After the match against Villa we took to Twitter to see what Arsenal fans thought of Mertesacker’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
I miss seeing Gabriel in the lineup, the sight of Mertesacker makes me depressed— Pat (@KingOziI) December 13, 2015
I would like us to go for Stones as a replacement for Mertesacker. I would also give them Chambers on a 2 year loan deal.Good deal for both?— RKGunner (@ArsenalRK) December 14, 2015
Them short passes between Cech and Mertesacker make me really uncomfortable— Lëvi (@LeviTheGooner) December 14, 2015
I'm on the verge of starting a Mertesacker is better than Sergio Ramos fan club & truce— drin (@DrinLala) December 13, 2015
@FootyHipstar Flamini should be 7,Mertesacker aswell. Ramsey lost the ball a couple of times,he should not be awarded the MOTM in my opinion— - (@MagicianSanti) December 13, 2015
