Alan Shearer suggested on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One on Sunday night (December 13) that goalkeeper Rob Elliot was key to Newcastle United’s win against Tottenham Hotspur away from home at the weekend.
Newcastle won their second successive Premier League game on Sunday evening, getting the better of Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane in North London.
Elliot had to make as many as eight saves over the course of the 90 minutes, as the Magpies climbed out of the relegation zone.
Newcastle legend Shearer was impressed with the performance of the 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper and said on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One on Sunday night (December 13): “A few weeks ago at Bournemouth he kept his team in the game with some superb saves and it was exactly the same against Spurs.
“If it wasn’t for him, Spurs would have had the game wrapped up by half-time. If it wasn’t for him, it would have been all over by half-time.”
The win against Tottenham followed a surprise 2-0 victory over Liverpool at St. James’ Park.
Back-to-back wins mean that Steve McClaren’s side have enhanced their chances of escaping the drop to the Championship at the end of the season.
The danger is still there for Newcastle, though, but the signs are positive for the Magpies.
Newcastle do have some good players and a squad capable of at least challenging for a top-10 finish in the Premier League.
Hopefully for the fans, the players will now start to show their true quality and put together a run of positive results over the festive period.
