Taking a look at two players - and a change of formation - that could transform this Manchester United side.
Despite spending hundreds of millions of pounds in the last few transfer windows Manchester United are in something of a mess, with their manager Louis van Gaal refusing to play the expansive, attack-minded football the Old Trafford faithful got used to during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure.
That era is long gone and with it is the near-certainty that United will end each and every campaign with at least one piece of silverware.
United have just endured a miserable week, crashing out of the Champions League in the group stage and losing 2-1 to Bournemouth to leave them fourth in the Premier League, four points behind current leaders Arsenal.
That by no means represents an awful first half of the campaign, but it is the way United have played that is really upsetting the fans – and plenty of neutrals, too.
They are boring, lacking pace out wide or creativity from the centre of the park, and while the talent is certainly there in the form of Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay, Ander Herrera and the like, those players are not being allowed to express themselves, instead sticking to a rigid and ineffective style.
So who could United sign in January to turn things round at Old Trafford? There will be limited options given that they have just crashed out of Europe’s elite competition and clubs are unlikely to cash in on their star-names midway through a campaign.
But Valencia winger Sofiane Feghouli is out of contract in the summer and could be available for a cut-price fee, while United must go all out for a prolific striker, with French international Alexandre Lacazette a wonderful – if unlikely – option.
The 24-year-old has been less effective for Lyon so far this season but playing in a more attack-minded United side he could notch a hatful and then some.
With all that in mind below is the side that may just be turning out for United once the January transfer window is closed…and everyone is fit and available:
