Before the Gunners’ clash with Aston Villa much of the talk was revolved around the excellent form of Ozil, a player who cost the North Londoners a club record fee back in 2013.
The former Real Madrid man has been in the form of his life this season, yet The Telegraph quote Moyes bizarrely saying before the game that the jury is still out on the German World Cup winner.
Ozil went on to provide yet another assist in a scintillating display for Arsenal in their 2-0 win at Aston Villa, prompting Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft to question Moyes’ judgement.
“I think the jury’s still out on Mesut Ozil,” said Moyes. Any chance people can count ASSISTS Jury still out? What a statement— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) diciembre 13, 2015
“I think the jury’s still out on Mesut Ozil,” said Moyes. I probably use some clichés too, but for God's sake let's bury this one— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) diciembre 13, 2015
The German international picked up his 13th Premier League assist of the season, a league tally which betters any other player in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
Moreover, Ozil broke a unique record for achieving at least one assist in seven consecutive league matches, a run which was snapped as he actually found the net himself.
His performance against Villa was yet more evidence of his growing influence in North London, and popular pundit Danny Higginbotham couldn’t praise him highly enough on Twitter.
Ozil. Once again outstanding. Makes the game look effortless.— Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) diciembre 13, 2015
Ozil’s record this season makes a mockery of Moyes’ pre-match comments, though one does have to wonder whether the now unemployed boss has actually seen much English football this season.
Moyes is undoubtedly an excellent manager, yet his recent sacking at Real Sociedad leaves him in a precarious position where the pressure will be on for him to succeed in his next job.
