Aston Villa's Idrissa Gueye was uncharacteristically poor in defeat to Arsenal

Aston Villa lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal.

Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye had a torrid afternoon as his side were defeated 2-0 by Arsenal.

The Villains have been wretched so far this season, winning on the opening day of the season and following that up with 15 games without a Premier League victory.

A number of questions have been asked of the club’s recruitment in the summer, with a number of players either vastly underperforming or simply not up to the task of Premier League football.

On player who has come out with a positive light, though, is holding midfielder Idrissa Gueye as the former Lille star regularly puts in decent performances despite his side’s struggles.

However, the Senegalese international looked totally out of sorts against the Gunners and put in the sort of performance you would associate with a player struggling at the foot of the table.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, Gueye did contribute in a number of key defensive areas yet the statistics could what was an uncharacteristically poor display.

The 26-year-old posted two tackles, four interceptions, one aerial winner and five defensive duels won.

However, he was badly exposed for Arsenal’s second goal as Aaron Ramsey surged forward to finish off a well-rounded move and he was often caught out of position in transitional play.

Villa’s struggles have come as a result of a number of players failing to perform, but their bid for survival becomes an impossible task when even their better players start to show vulnerability.

With just six points from 16 matches, Remi Garde’s side find themselves in deep trouble and are now in need of a minor miracle in order to preserve their top-flight status.
