Both Carroll and Lamela started the Premier League game at White Hart Lane in North London.
While the 23-year-old English midfielder played until the 69th minute, the Argentina international winger was on the pitch for 86 minutes.
Carroll, who has been at Tottenham his entire career so far, failed to make a huge impact against Newcastle.
The former England Under-21 international did not take a single shot, had a pass accuracy of 81%, created two chances, did not win any of his tackles, and made two interceptions and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Lamela took three shots, had a pass accuracy of 71%, created three chances, put in four crosses, attempted two dribbles, and made one block.
Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to have their say on the displays of Carroll and Lamela.

And I'm done with Tom Carroll aswell. He isn't anywhere near good enough and we need to let him go #THFC— Daniel James (@danieljames83) December 13, 2015
Gutted and pretty angry. Ridiculous gamble to play Carroll and the team suffered. We will learn but a truly baffling decision #THFC— Nick Cowan (@nicktheyid61) December 13, 2015
Lamela looks for contact and Eriksen shy's away from every challenge. Tom Carroll did not complete a single pass to a #THFC player.— Richard (@Nadolski) December 13, 2015
Carroll was a curious selection, game passed him by, but we did only concede after he went off. Probably more to do with Mitrovic tho #THFC— Goalden Knee (@GoaldenKnee) December 13, 2015

Lamela was about the only that showed up today #THFC— Andrew Labib (@Andrew_Labib) December 13, 2015
On a positive note, Walker and Lamela both played well and Rose is progressing every week #coys— Spurs Fan (@spurstweeter) December 13, 2015
