BBC pundit Jason Roberts wonders where Tottenham Hotspur would be in the league if they had signed Saido Berahino

Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for the West Brom striker.

Tottenham Hotspur's excellent run of form got a reality check today as they were defeated for the first time in the Premier League this season since the opening day.

They conceded a late goal against Newcastle United to succumb to a 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane.

It was a performance that did not reflect Spurs' recent form - which has seen them emerge as serious title contenders.

Prior to the game BBC pundit and former Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts was singing their praises on Radio 5 Live.

He even mused on the potential of Spurs if they had Saido Berahino in the side and spoke of the importance of Dele Alli and Eric Dier.

He stated:

"I’m so impressed with Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino. The results are excellent but more so the identity he's put in place. That’s the exciting thing about them.

"Defensively they’re so solid. He’s added steel to the side and belief and with young English players, which is wonderful - the bravery to put Dele Alli in.

"When I first saw him and Eric Dier in midfield I thought what's going on. But the way they get around the pitch is so impressive.

"If Saido Berahino came in and added goals to supplement Harry Kane, where would they be?"

There is no doubt that Berahino would be a fantastic signing for Spurs.

Heung-min Son and Clinton N'Jie are looking more like wide options for the club at the moment and the West Brom man would make a fantastic addition to the English contingent at Spurs.

He is currently struggling for form at WBA but his talent is undisputed.

Right now Spurs still look a little short but with Berahino thrown in the mix they might just have enough to muster up a title change.
