The former Montpellier player is often questioned by pundits and observers alike, with many imploring Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to strengthen the Gunners’ attack last summer.
But Giroud has proven his worth to the team on a number of occasions this season, and none more so than on Wednesday night as he bagged a hat-trick in the 3-0 victory over Olympiakos in Athens.
Carraghers feels he is vastly underrated by his critics and extremely important to this Arsenal side.
“Everyone keeps talking about how Arsene Wenger needs to buy a new centre-forward but I think Giroud is one of the most underrated players in the Barclays Premier League,” Carragher explained.
“Does Giroud have the class of some other forwards from the Wenger era? The answer would be no, if you were comparing him to Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp or Nicolas Anelka.”
“But the Frenchman’s importance to this side should not be undervalued. “
“Put it another way, if Wenger wanted to get better than Giroud, he would be moving into the highest, and most expensive, bracket of all. Those strikers are not easy to find and not easy to buy.”
“If Giroud continues as he has been, why would Wenger need to buy at all?”
Giroud has 26 goals in all competitions this year, level with Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
This season alone he has eight in nine Premier League starts and five in four Champions League starts, not bad for a striker deemed not good enough to win the league by a certain sector.
With Theo Walcott providing pace and movement behind the defence, the Gunners have an excellent balance upfront and options to counter any particular defensive set-up.
