The Costa Rican was a star performer in the win over Olympiacos recently.
The Costa Rican is very much a squad player at the Emirates, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain ahead of him in the pecking order.
However, with all of those players having spent time out injured this season, he has enjoyed a run in Arsene Wenger’s side of late.
He has done well, with several impressive performances hinting that he may have a long term future at the club.
Merson though, doesn’t believe that is the case and instead feels Wenger will be thinking he can get good money for the youngster in the January transfer window.
“I still think he’s got a very long way to go. If everyone’s fit, he’s so far down the pecking order,” he told Sky Sports.
“I don’t know if Arsene Wenger is looking at his current form and thinking ‘I might get £8-9million in January’.”
“This lad is getting a taste and he’ll want to play football, and he won’t get that at Arsenal unless they have a lot of injuries. Aston Villa would take him.”
At that price, there are likely to be several teams in the Premier League alone that would be interested in taking Campbell from Arsenal.
There is no denying that the winger has talent, as evidenced by his display in the Champions League against Olympiacos this midweek.
Extended game time is not likely to be forthcoming at Arsenal though given the options they have, meaning a move may well be best for both parties, whether that’s in January or the summer, remains to be seen.
