The defender has been linked with a move to Villa Park in the January transfer window.
Cole is currently out of favour with Italian giants Roma, having failed to feature for them since last season.
He, and the club, are looking determined to bring an end to that problem, with a number of clubs being linked with a move for the 35-year-old.
One of those are Aston Villa, with manager Remi Garde this week confirming his side were exploring the opportunity to bring him to Villa Park, via the Guardian.
Le Tissier though, says that it would be a surprising signing from the Villains.
“I think perhaps Ashley’s best days are quite a way behind him now,” he told Sky Sports.
“Is he better than what they’ve got? You might argue that. But it would be a strange one for me.”
When it comes to quality, Cole would likely represent an improvement on what Garde currently has at his disposal.
Having lost Jordan Amavi, who was first choice, for the rest of the season, Kieran Richardson is now the first choice in the position, but he has been widely criticised for his performances.
Cole would likely represent an improvement there then, although given his lack of game time and advancing age, it may be wise for Garde to explore other options first.
