Arsene Wenger explains why Arsenal don’t need Karim Benzema

Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud is currently at the top of his game.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out a move for Karim Benzema, telling Sky Sports that his side don’t have a need for him with Olivier Giroud in such good form.

The Gunners have long been linked with the French international striker, despite the player seemingly happy and playing regularly for La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Many supporters urged Wenger to sign Benzema las summer, yet the Arsenal boss explains his side have no need for him, with Giroud proving more than capable at the Emirates.

“Olivier Giroud is a great striker, so behind that we cannot buy Karim Benzema," Wenger said.

"He [Giroud] is not only a goal scorer, he's a guy who puts work in for the team. I think he's among the best strikers in Europe. I believe recently he has come back with an improved game and with his finishing.”

“Wednesday was one of his best performances on all fronts."

Giroud has eight Premier League goals in only nine starts, while another five goals in the Champions League makes him the club’s outright top scorer this season.

The former Montpellier man proved his worth on Wednesday as he netted a hat-trick for the Gunners in their 3-0 Champions League victory over Olympiakos in Athens.

Capable of scoring all types of goals, the 29-year-old has grown to be an important player for the club and his contributions are often vastly underrated by supporters and observers alike.

Benzema has 11 goals in all competitions thus far for Madrid, suggesting that right now Giroud is France’s leading number nine and should be a serious contender to start next summer’s European Championships.
