Report: Manchester United eye up 20-year-old novice Nelson Monte as solution to defensive woes

The Portuguese talent has made just a handful of professional appearances.

Manchester United currently have a defensive crisis at the club with a string of defenders on the sidelines.

With that in mind a long list of potential recruits have been mooted for Louis van Gaal but today has seen perhaps the most surprising link to an Old Trafford move.

The player in question is 20-year-old Portuguese defender Nelson Monte.

The Telegraph reported the interest yesterday and now Portuguese paper A Bola is also claiming that United could make a move for the rather unknown defensive prospect.

The Portugal Under-19 defender came through the ranks at Benfica but did not make the grade at the Lisbon club.

In 2012, after his release, he headed to Rio Ave to continue his development where he remains today.

Monte has played just 17 games of professional football and can feature at both right-back and centre-back.

But his lack of experience would certainly suggest that he is being considered more as a player for the future at Old Trafford rather than solving their current problems.
