Mauricio Pochettino claims he's helped to transform Erik Lamela at Tottenham Hotspur

Erik Lamela has scored seven goals in 18 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes that Erik Lamela has transformed as a player under his stewardship, as covered by his comments in the Independent.

When Pochettino took over at White Hart Lane, Lamela’s future looked bleak, with the Argentine winger’s performances during his first season in English football falling well short of the required standard.

However, the 23-year-old has been excellent so far this term – and he scored a hat-trick in Tottenham’s match against Monaco in the Europa League on Thursday.

And Pochettino said: “Lamela has not surprised me. He is a great talent. He deserves the headlines. When a younger player like Lamela arrives in a new country they need time to adapt. He is more confident and looks a different player from two years ago.”

Lamela’s three goals against Monaco helped Tottenham to pick up a 4-1 win at White Hart Lane.

The victory meant that Spurs topped their Europa League group, and extended their very impressive run of form.

Lamela now has seven goals in just 18 games this season.

The winger is thriving in Tottenham’s high-pressing system, and he is contributing in both an attacking and defensive sense.

Lamela will be hoping to carry his momentum in Spurs’ weekend fixture, which is against Newcastle United at White Hart Lane.
