A former Tottenham Hotspur defender is very impressed with a current one.
The Belgian international spent last season on loan at Southampton where he excelled, catching the eye of Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino in the process, and when the time came for him to leave his parent-club Atletico Madrid permanently he headed not to the south coast but to north London.
It has since proved to be one of the canniest transfers of the summer, with Alderweireld forming a brilliant partnership with his international teammate Jan Vertonghen and helping his side go 14 matches undefeated in the Premier League.
That could continue when Tottenham take on Newcastle United on Sunday, but whatever happens Roberts clearly rates the 26-year-old.
Writing on Twitter on Friday evening, Roberts said, “Have to say, as an ex-Spurs centre half I am delighted with Toby Alderweireld. What a class act; proper defender.”
He certainly is and at this rate Tottenham could well secure some silverware by the end of the campaign.
Alderweireld has featured 21 times for Tottenham already this season, an ever-present both in the Premier League and in Europe, and at this rate he is definitely a candidate to be their Player of the Season.
