Former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen backs Gunners to clinch Premier League title

Thomas Vermaelen Pre FA Cup Press Conference

Arsene Wenger's side are one of a number of teams in the running to win the title this season.

Former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is confident that the Gunners can break away from a number of rivals and clinch the Premier League title this season, the Mirror reports.

Arsene Wenger's side are currently without several key players, with the likes of Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla all out injured, but the Barcelona defender is still backing his old team to go the distance if they respond well when the players return.

"I've been watching them and they look very strong. They are missing some important players but if you play so many games that can happen," he said.

"It's difficult to predict in England who is going to be the champions but if you look at the results Arsenal are always up there and I hope the injured players come back.

"I hope they can do it. I think it’s important to stay injury free but if the players are available they’re definitely up there and I can see them winning it," he added.

With champions Chelsea situated in the bottom half of the table, while Leicester City are the surprise pace-setters, there has arguably not been a better opportunity for Wenger's side to move out of the pack, and clinch the league crown, since their Invincibles stormed their way to the trophy in 2004.

The division is so congested currently that it has provided Arsenal with an opportunity to get their players back from injury, and not feel like they are playing catch up upon their return. And when they do return, they may be able to put their foot on the accelerator.
