Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy highlighted a worry he has about Newcastle United on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (December 7).
“The worry for me is he (Wijnaldum) is a midfield player and he is their top goalscorer,” said Murphy.
Murphy made the comments following Newcastle’s surprise 2-0 victory over Liverpool at St. James’ Park in the Premier League last weekend.
Wijnaldum, who joined the Magpies from Dutch giants PSV in the summer transfer window, was on target for the home team.
It was the 25-year-old Netherlands international midfielder’s seventh goal in the league this season, four more than striker Ayoze Perez.
While Murphy does have a point about a midfield player scoring most of the goals for Newcastle, it also shows that head coach Steve McClaren does not have to rely on his strikers to find the opposition net.
Newcastle are back in action on Sunday evening when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the Premier League.
