Giroud moves ahead of Arsenal legend after Olympiacos hat-trick

Giroud V Stoke

The Frenchman has surpassed Dennis Bergkamp, but is still some way behind Robin Van Persie and Thierry Henry.

Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Olympiacos on Wednesday evening was an evening that Olivier Giroud will remember for several reasons.

He managed to score all three goals for his side on the evening to see them secure a crucial win and progress into the last season despite their awful start to the group stages.

That hattrick was his first for the club, while he also became the fourth player to score on the Champions League for the Gunners, alongside Thierry Henry, Niklas Bendtner and Danny Welbeck.

However, there was a more important record he was beat with his goals in the win in Greece, as managed to surpass an Arsenal legend for Champions League goals.

Giroud’s trio saw him move up to ten in total in Europe for Arsene Wenger’s side, taking him three past Dennis Bergkamp, who only managed seven.

While that is an impressive tally for the French forward, he still has some way to go before reaching the top of the charts.

His ten goals put him sixth on the list of Arsenal’s all time top goal scorers in the Champions League, and far behind joint two Robin Van Persie and Thierry Henry.

The Dutchman scored 18 during his time at the Emirates, while Henry is currently the leader on 35 in total.

Nonetheless, it was a memorable performance from Giroud, who will be hoping to replicate this kind of form again in the latter stages as his side eye a place beyond the last sixteen.
