Jose Fonte says he couldn't run two days before starting for Southampton against Aston Villa

St Marys Southampton

Southampton drew 1-1 with Aston Villa in their most recent outing.

Jose Fonte has told the Daily Echo that he could not run just two days prior to Southampton’s match against Aston Villa last weekend.

Fonte was struggling with injury in the build up to the Saints’ most recent encounter, but he still managed to start last Saturday.

The Portuguese defender played through the pain barrier, as Southampton managed to pick up a 1-1 draw against struggling Villa.

And Fonte said: “The fact that I was on the pitch (against Villa) after I couldn’t run on Wednesday and on Thursday I struggled to run at more than 50 per cent , it tells you how I take it.

“I take it very seriously and I feel like my job is to try and help the team no matter what.

Fonte has become a fans’ favourite at St. Mary’s, and he has experienced the good and the bad times at the club.

The powerful centre-back has been with the Saints throughout their rise from League One, and he is still playing a key role.

Fonte has proved to be a very reliable defender, even at the top level, and the fact that he started against Villa proved just how highly Ronald Koeman regards him.

Unfortunately for Southampton, Fonte’s inclusion was not enough to get them the victory against Villa.

Despite dominating for much of the contest, Southampton couldn’t make their chances count and their draw against Villa extends their winless run to four matches.
