Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal put his faith in young defender Guillermo Varela against Wolfsburg.
Despite their surprise Champions League exit, Varela performed well, on his first ever start for the club.
In the match in Germany, Varela managed to better every other United defender this season in the Champions League - in terms of the number of tackles won.
He won five, two more than Matteo Darmian did in the home leg, the previous highest.
|Guillermo Varela||Wolfsburg vs Man Utd||5|
|Matteo Darmian||Man Utd vs Wolfsburg||3|
|Antonio Valencia||Man Utd vs Wolfsburg||2|
|Antonio Valencia||CSKA Moscow vs Man Utd||2|
|Matteo Darmian||Man Utd vs PSV Eindhoven||2|
|Marcos Rojo||Man Utd vs CSKA Moscow||2|
|Chris Smalling||Man Utd vs Wolfsburg||2|
As well as being particularly impressive for the young Uruguayan, the figures show a lack of tenacity from the more experienced defenders over the course of the campaign.
Varela is evidently deserving of more opportunities for United, and they could well come in the Europa League later in the season.
He has been featuring for the club's under-21 side previously, and played last season on loan at Real Madrid's B side.
The 22-year-old is at the age where he needs to kick on, and he demonstrated last night as well as against West Ham as a substitute at the weekend that he is more than ready.
