Former Manchester United treble winners Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole have expressed their disappointment at the club's group stage exit from the Champions League.
United were beaten 3-2 by Wolfsburg, eliminated after winning just two of their six games in the competition.
PSV beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 to ensure they would not qualify through the back door, and now are left facing the Europa League next spring.
Cole reacted in disbelief as United conceded a third goal after hauling themselves back into the game at 2-2.
This is madness— Andrew Cole (@vancole9) December 8, 2015
Former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was more cutting, expressing his opinion that the team simply are not good enough.
THAT was as average as it could be. Not great at all and there's a long way to go.!— Peter Schmeichel (@Pschmeichel1) December 8, 2015
United could hide behind injuries costing them this particular game, but the same excuse cannot be offered for the previous five matches in which they were not good enough.
They took just one point from two games against Dutch champions PSV, which proved costly to their chances, and simply left themselves with too much to do heading into the final game against a Wolfsburg side which had not lost at home in more than 30 matches.
