Libor Kozak has made just one appearance for Aston Villa in the past two seasons.
Kozak has not made a single appearance under Remi Garde so far, and recent reports in the Birmingham Mail have linked him with a move to Birmingham City.
However, Merson feels that the target-man should be handed a chance at Villa Park, due to their need to start picking up points.
“With the Czech lad that has come from Lazio, you have got to play him,” the former Arsenal midfielder said.
“Get the ball up front, play in the other team's half and get the ball as far away from your own goal as you can possibly do and go from there.”
Kozak’s time at Villa so far has been plagued by injury, and he was forced to miss the whole of the 2014/15 campaign with a broken leg.
The 26-year-old scored four times in his first 15 appearances for Villa during the 2013/14 season, and he looked fairly bright.
However, his only chance for Villa this term came in the Capital One Cup against League Two side Notts County.
Kozak’s future at Villa now looks in doubt, unless he can somehow force his way into Garde’s starting line-up over the coming weeks.
Villa are in dire need of finding a goalscorer, as they currently sit seven points away from safety after failing to win any of their last 14 matches.
