They signed the player from Dougie Freedman's former team Bolton Wanderers. With the Trotters struggling at the foot of the table, and Trotter not being able to buy a game at the Macron Stadium, his signing certainly surprised many at Nottingham Forest.
But he has made a good impression since joining the club. He scored on his debut and his good form saw his deal at the club extended last month.
Today it has been extended by a further 28 days.
Trotter has played seven times at Forest, mainly as a substitute.
But with the busy period of festive fixtures coming up Forest have done well to keep him on board for now. Whilst his impact can appear minimal, numbers will definitely be needed to get Forest through to January.
However that view was not shared with some Forest fans, who saw no need to keep the player at the club any further.

Liam Trotter's loan at #nffc has been extended for another month. Great news!— Emily Anderson (@EmilyMay10) December 9, 2015
Star player or not, Trotter will provide great cover for our in-form midfield duo, if not as back up for when Cohen and Teche are fit #NFFC— Alex Papadopoulos (@APapadopoulos1) December 9, 2015
1. Not convinced by Trotter but his sheer size gives us a presence we don't have in midfield. There is a player in the somewhere. #nffc— 29Eley (@29Eley) December 9, 2015
As if fans are moaning about trotter we have so many games coming up we need the numbers stop whinging about everything DF does #nffc— JackNFFCLeigh (@jackleigh5) December 9, 2015
A lot of strange anger at the Trotter loan renewal. Not a bad player at this level and gives us cover throughout December. Huge month #nffc— Andy Hose (@ahosey31) December 9, 2015
