Nicol said: “Consistency is what is holding them back. Last four games: two incredible performances and two rotten performances. To win the title you have to be consistent. I don’t think they are title contenders, but they are definitely top four material.”
The Reds have enjoyed something of a revival since the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as head coach, although they still suffer occasional lapses which mean they cannot be considered a real title contender.
They can secure exceptional victories, as they did against Chelsea and Manchester City, whilst they can also struggle to perform to an almost dreadful level, as they did against Swansea and Newcastle.
Klopp’s team may have picked up a victory against the Swans, but it was not enjoyable, and then they fell to a 2-0 loss to a Newcastle team who have been beyond shocking for the majority of this campaign.
On their day, Liverpool are arguably the best side in the division, but, as Nicol states, until they start to do this on a more consistent basis, the Merseyside giants will struggle to pick up enough points on a weekly basis to potentially top the league table.
Nicol has no doubts that they are top four contenders, but right now, Klopp should not be making any plans of winning the English league title.
