A 3-2 defeat in Germany meant the Red Devils were consigned to the Europa League, with PSV's win over CSKA Moscow ensuring so.
United were without key players like Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney thanks to injury.
The lack of depth in the squad was exposed, highlighted by Nick Powell and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson coming on as substitutes.
Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela made his first start for the club in the match, after stepping up from the under-21s at the weekend by coming off the bench against West Ham.
Despite being asked to cope in difficult circumstances, and the team conceding three goals, Varela acquitted himself well.
The former Penarol youngster made five successful tackles and two clearances, giving away just one foul, and making once interception.
He did enough to show he deserves more opportunities at the club, and should not be castigated for the team's display.
Here is a look at how supporters reacted to his performance...
Varela and Borthwick-Jackson have performed admirably. Well done young chaps. Keep it up!#mufc— Grant Dunlop (@grantdunlop) December 8, 2015
Varela has been quality. Been really impressed with his first two games for United. Defiantly needs to start more often. #mufc— Michael (@MichaelCzepak) December 8, 2015
