Manchester United fans hit out at Wayne Rooney on Twitter over Everton visit

Wayne Rooney was back at Everton last night to watch his former team in action.

Wayne Rooney is rich and successful enough to not be bothered about what anybody thinks of him.

As England's all time leading international goalscorer, it's easy to argue being able to feel like this is deserved.

Last night he was at Goodison Park to watch former club Everton take on Crystal Palace in a Premier League game.

The timing of his visit was however seized upon by fans of his club, Manchester United, who expressed disappointment at his trip, just 24 hours ahead of a crucial game for the Red Devils.

Rooney was left behind by United, who have travelled to Germany for a must win Champions League game against Wolfsburg, which will decide whether or not they progress to the knockout rounds.

The striker is the club captain, but rather than fly out with his teammates he has remained in England, and now popped up on Merseyside to watch his former team.

There could well be good reason for him being left at home, potentially to undergo treatment on his injured ankle which is keeping him out of the fixture.

The problem is Rooney's form has been so inconsistent this season - scoring only two Premier League goals - that an innocent family trip to Goodison Park, was an excuse for supporters to criticise him.

Here is a look at the reaction on social media to his return to Everton...
