Newcastle star Wijnaldum has been compared with former Tottenham hero Luka Modric.
Jenas said: “What I love most about the Dutchman is the amount of responsibility he takes in that team. He’s always available for the ball and prepared to receive it in tough areas. He doesn’t just want the ball when he has space, he will take it anytime, anywhere. The only other player I’ve come across like that in my career is Luka Modric when we played together at Tottenham. They both have something within them. A mentality of, ‘just give me the ball, whenever’. And that’s exactly what Wijnaldum is like.”
Wijnaldum arrived at Newcastle over the summer, agreeing a permanent switch after leading PSV to the Eredivisie title as captain last season.
An extremely gifted midfielder, many were surprised that the Magpies managed to secure Wijnaldum’s signature, and he has been one of few highlights for Steve McClaren’s side this term.
15 Premier League appearances have brought seven goals and two assists, and he regularly ranks highly for pass completion and attempted rates in relation to his teammates. He is having a positive impact on McClaren’s side, and has established himself as a versatile option in the Magpies’ midfield.
Jenas believes he shows some comparisons with Modric, as the Dutchman is always looking to receive the ball and take pressure off his teammates, regardless of his current situation on the field of play.
Wijnaldum is looking to take responsibility for his team during the game, and has shown that he will stand up and be counted whenever needed in McClaren’s set-up.
He can still improve, and there are games when his influence has not been as great as it has been, but Wijnaldum has so far lived up to his reputation as one of the best signings of this summer transfer window with his early season displays.
