HITC Sport understands The Royals want their former boss back in charge
Reading have offered Brian McDermott the chance to return to the club, HITC Sport understands.
The Royals are looking for a new boss after axing Steve Clarke last week, but hopes are still high on Berkshire that they can mount a serious promotion push.
They are considering a number of candidates but HITC Sport has been told by sources close to the situation that McDermott is their first choice.
McDermott spent four successful years in charge of Reading after taking charge in 2009 and guided them to the Premier League in 2012.
He was axed by the club in February 2013 by then owner, Russian Anton Zingarevich, despite the fact he won Premier League Manager of the Month just a few weeks before.
He then took over Leeds United just a few weeks later, but the arrival of controversial Italian Massimo Cellino soon saw his tenure come to an end in 2014;
He is now working as chief scout for Arsenal and he is understood to be very happy in his role, but Reading are hoping that they can persuade him back into club management.
