Eric Dier has been in sensational form for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has told the club’s official website that Mauricio Pochettino predicted Eric Dier’s rise before the season started.

Many Spurs fans had wanted the club to sign a defensive midfielder before the 2015/16 campaign began, but Pochettino had faith that Dier would be able to cover that void.

And the Argentine’s judgement has been proved correct, with Dier proving to be one of Spurs’ top performers this season.

Levy feels that the 21-year-old’s rise has been an example of Pochettino’s managerial ability, and he has asked supporters to trust the Argentine’s judgement in future transfer windows.

"I think most people were hoping that we were going to buy a defensive midfield in the summer, but one of the skills of Mauricio is that he understands exactly what’s in that dressing room," Levy explained.

"He said to me [in the summer]: ‘I don’t want a defensive midfielder. I am very comfortable that I can make Eric Dier into a top defensive midfielder.’

"I think if we asked most people [before the season started], they would have said he was wrong. We have to give credit to Mauricio for his skill, and you have to trust his judgement."

Dier’s performances in defensive midfield have seen his stock rise at a rapid rate.

The former Sporting Lisbon man showed signs of promise last term, while playing in defence, but since he has been given a role in the midfield, he has been a revelation.

Dier has now earned a senior England cap, and he has been one of the Premier League’s standout players so far.

Dier’s good form has also helped to elevate Spurs into Champions League contention, with Pochettino’s side currently sitting in fifth place.
